Pipette tips are a small, easy-to-overlook contamination point in a PFAS-sensitive workflow—they touch every sample and standard you handle. Here's what actually differentiates one PFAS-free tip from another.
Fit comes first
A pipette tip that doesn't seat properly on your specific pipette model can leak, deliver inaccurate volumes, or fall off mid-transfer—no PFAS-free designation fixes a fit problem. Confirm the tip is rated for your pipette brand and model before evaluating anything else.
Volume range and graduation
Match the tip's rated volume range to your actual transfer volumes—using a tip far outside its intended range hurts accuracy at both ends of its range. Graduated tips help with visual volume checks; low-retention tips reduce sample loss to the tip's inner surface, which matters more for viscous or precious samples than for routine aqueous transfers.
Filtered vs. non-filtered
Filter tips include a barrier that blocks aerosols and liquid from reaching the pipette shaft—standard practice for PCR and other contamination-sensitive work. If your workflow doesn't need aerosol protection, non-filtered tips cost less and work fine; the filter is a specific answer to a specific contamination risk, not a universal upgrade.
What "PFAS-free" adds—and what it doesn't confirm
A PFAS-free designation addresses the tip's own material background, not its fit, accuracy, or sterility—those remain separate specifications to check independently.
