PFAS-free labware: what it covers and when you need it

Why ordinary labware can be a problem

Some plastics, coatings, and manufacturing aids used in conventional labware can themselves contain trace PFAS. For most lab work that's irrelevant. But if you're running a PFAS analytical method, the labware touching your sample becomes a potential contamination source in its own right—background PFAS from your own tubes or tips can bias a result that's supposed to measure PFAS in the sample.

What typically falls under "PFAS-free labware"

Centrifuge tubes, sample bottles, pipette tips, laboratory syringes, and similar plasticware sourced or manufactured with attention to PFAS content in the materials and process. It's a category defined by the labware's own construction, not the sample it holds—the same PFAS-free tube can hold any sample; the point is that it shouldn't introduce PFAS background of its own.

When you actually need it

If you're running EPA or similar PFAS analytical methods, doing PFAS method development, or supporting a PFAS-sensitive research program, PFAS-free labware is usually a real requirement, not a nice-to-have—background contamination from ordinary labware can invalidate low-level results. For work that has nothing to do with PFAS analysis, standard labware is generally fine and PFAS-free labware doesn't add value.
